The Río Nupe is the left source river of the Río Marañón , which in turn is the left source river of the Amazon . The Río Nupe flows through the province of Lauricocha in the southwest of the Peruvian administrative region Huánuco .

River course

The headwaters of the Río Nupe are located on the eastern flank of the 6635  m high Nevado Yerupajá , the highest point of the Cordillera Huayhuash , which in turn is part of the Peruvian western cordillera . Measured from the 4285  m high glacial rim lake Laguna Quesillococha , the river length is 53 km. The two mountain lakes Laguna Ciula and Laguna Carhuacocha are located on the upper reaches of the Río Nupe . In addition, the Río Nupe is fed by the runoff from the glacial lake Laguna Gangrajanca . The Río Nupe flows below the lake Laguna Carhuacocha 10 km in a north-northeast direction. This section of the river is also called Río Carhuacocha . Below the settlement of Queropalca at river kilometer 36, the Río Machaycancha meets the Río Nupe coming from the west. This cuts through a mountain ridge for the next 6 kilometers in a south-southeast direction. Then, at river kilometer 29, the Río Huayhuash meets the Río Nupe coming from the south. This now turns towards the north-northeast. At river kilometer 26, the settlement of Concepción is on the right bank of the river, about one and a half kilometers downstream the settlement of Santa Rosa is on the left bank. At river kilometer 13 the Río Nupe passes the municipality of Baños . At river km 6.5 the settlement Pilcocancha is on the left bank of the river. The Río Nupe finally joins the Río Lauricocha to the Río Marañón east of the municipality of Rondos at an altitude of about 3310  m .

Catchment area

The Río Nupe drains an approximately 810 km² area on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Western Cordillera. Further to the east and southeast, the catchment area of the Río Nupe borders on that of the Río Lauricocha. In the west, the main ridge of the Cordillera Huayhuash forms the watershed to the Río Pativilca and Río Huaura , which flow west to the Pacific Ocean . In the north lies the catchment area of the Río Vizcarra , a left tributary of the Río Marañón.
