The Río Vizcarra , also Urqumayu or Orgomayo , is a 46 km (including source rivers: 74 km) long left tributary of the Río Marañón , left source river of the Amazon , in Peru . The Río Vizcarra flows through the province of Bolognesi in the east of the administrative region of Ancash and the province of Dos de Mayo in the administrative region of Huánuco .

River course

The Río Vizcarra arises on the northern outskirts of Huallanca at the confluence of the Río Ishpaj (right) and Río Torres (left). The source rivers arise on the eastern slope of the Cordillera Huallanca , a mountain range of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The Río Vizcarra initially flows 19 km in an east-northeast direction, then it flows in a predominantly north-northeast direction. At river kilometer 35 the river cuts through a mountain ridge running in NNW-SSE direction. The Río Vizcarra then crosses the province of Dos de Mayo. The national road 3N follows the course of the river. At river kilometer 25, the two places Ripán are on the left and La Unión on the right on the river bank. The Río Vizcarra finally flows into the Río Marañón at an altitude of about 2960  m .

Catchment area

The Río Vizcarra drains an approximately 1580 km² area on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Western Cordillera. The Río Nupe , left headwaters of the Río Marañón, runs further south , further north the Río Puchca .

Use of hydropower

At the southern source flow Rio Ishpaj the dam is Presa Chiuruco from which the water power plant Huallanca is supplied with water. This is located on the southwestern outskirts of Huallanca, one kilometer above the junction of the Río Ishpaj and Río Torres to the Río Vizcarra.

There are plans for two hydropower plants, Vizcarra-1 and Vizcarra-2 , in the Yanas district on the lower reaches of the Río Vizcarra. These would be designed for a discharge of 35 m³ / s and have a total capacity of 140 MW. The water used on the lowest seven kilometers of the river would be diverted via underground pipelines.
