Huánuco is a city in the Peruvian Andes and the capital of the Huánuco region . It had 84,612 inhabitants in 2017. 196,627 people lived in the metropolitan area.
history
The city was founded on August 15, 1539 by the Spanish Conquistador Gómez de Alvarado y Contreras under the name La muy noble y leal ciudad de los Caballeros del León de Huánuco on the site of the Inca city of Yarowilca. Later, Pedro Barroso moved the settlement to the valley of the Río Huallaga to avoid the attacks by Illa Túpac and his army.
Huánuco has been a bishopric since 1865 .
geography
The city is located at around 1880 meters in the Yunga (after Pulgar Vidal) or the Tierra Templada in the valley of the Río Huallaga . Huánuco has around 120,000 inhabitants (INEI 2005 ). The city is located on an important transport axis that connects Pucallpa with Lima and is served by the Alférez FAP David Figueroa Fernandini Airport (IATA: HUU, ICAO: SPNC).

Sports
The city is home to two major football clubs. Firstly, the Club Deportivo Social Cultural Alianza Universidad de Huánuco, founded in 1939, which has played in the first Peruvian league since the 2019 season. On the other hand, León de Huánuco , who plays in the Copa Peru, which is played at the amateur level.
