Javier Pulgar Vidal

Javier Pulgar Vidal , (born January 2, 1911 in Panao , Huánuco Department , Peru , † May 18, 2003 in Lima ) was a Peruvian geographer who achieved fame for his main work on the "eight regions of Peru".

Life

Pulgar studied at the Peruvian National College of Mining in Huánuco and at the Faculty of Humanities of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú .

His dissertation ( 1940 ) with the title “The eight natural regions of Peru” ( Las ocho regiones naturales del Perú ) represented a break with the traditional division of Peru into only three geographical regions (coast / costa , mountains / sierra and rainforest / selva ) Instead, he made the following division of the Peruvian Andean region from the Pacific coast to the Amazon in eight altitude levels on the basis of characteristics with regard to climate , geography , fauna and flora :
