Ambo is the capital of the Ambo Province in the Huánuco region of central Peru . The city is also the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The 2017 census counted 7444 inhabitants.

The city is located 22 km south of the regional capital Huánuco at an altitude of 2064  m in the river valley of the Río Huallaga at the confluence of its left tributary Río Huertas . The national road 3N runs through the city.
