River course
The Río Huancabamba rises in the north of the province of Huancabamba ( Piura region ) near the Ecuadorian border in the Peruvian western cordillera . The headwaters are located above the mountain lake Laguna Shimbe at an altitude of around 3450 m . The Río Huancabamba initially flows 100 km south through the mountains. At the beginning it flows through the 4 km long mountain lake Laguna Shimbe . At river kilometer 128 he passes the provincial capital Huancabamba . From river kilometer 89 the river forms the western, later the southwestern border of the province of Jaén . At river kilometer 39 is the dam of the Limón dam . Since 2014, as part of the Olmos irrigation project, water has been transported from there via a nearly 20 km long tunnel to the west side of the Andes. Below the dam, the river runs within the Cajamarca region . The province of Cutervo lies south of the lower reaches . The Río Huancabamba turns towards east-southeast. At river kilometer 7 the river passes the small town of Pucará on the left bank . Finally, the Río Huancabamba meets the Río Chotano , which comes from the south , with which it joins the Río Chamaya.
Catchment area
The Río Huancabamba drains an area of about 3670 km² on the east side of the Peruvian Western Cordillera. In the west, the continental divide separates the catchment area of the Río Huancabamba from the tributaries of the Pacific Ocean . In the northeast lies the catchment area of the Río Chinchipe , in the east that of the Río Huayllabamba .
