The Río Huancabamba (upper reaches: Río Chontabamba ) is the 117 km long right source river of the Río Pozuzo in east-central Peru in the Oxapampa province ( Pasco region ).

River course

The Río Huancabamba rises as Río Chontabamba in the eastern foothills of the Cordillera Huaguruncho , almost 30 km west of the city of Oxapampa , at an altitude of about 3680  m . The river initially runs 30 km in an easterly direction through the mountains. He passes the village of Chontabamba . At the town of Oxapampa it takes the Río Llamaquizú from the right and turns to the northwest and then runs along the western flank of the Cordillera Yanachaga . Now the river is called Río Huancabamba . Near the settlement of Huancabamba , at river kilometer 47, the Río Huaylamayo meets the river coming from the southwest. This now turns north and flows through a narrow valley. The Río Huancabamba passes the hamlet of Prusia and the small town of Pozuzo before it meets the Río Santa Cruz coming from the west , with which it joins the Río Pozuzo.

Catchment area

The catchment area covers an area of around 1940 km². It is bounded to the east by the Cordillera Yanachaga. In the south-west, the catchment area extends to the glaciated mountain range of the 5723  m high Huaguruncho .
