The Huaguruncho or Nevado Huaguruncho (also Nevado Tarata or Nevado Huagaruncho ) is a glaciated mountain in the administrative region of Pasco in central Peru . The mountain is in the province of Pasco . The districts of Huachón and Ticlacayán meet here. The Huaguruncho is at 5723 m the highest point of the Cordillera Huaguruncho , a mountain range of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The village of Huachón is located at the southern foot of the mountain .
Most of the mountain range is drained by the Río Huachón , a left tributary of the Río Paucartambo . The rivers Quebrada Ranracancha and Río Lecma , both of which flow into the Río Pozuzo , arise on the northeast flank of the Huaguruncho .
The nearest higher peak is the Nevado Carnicero, just 107 km away in the Cordillera Huayhuash in the Peruvian Western Cordillera .
Ascent history
Mike Westmacott and John Streetly, participants in a British expedition, made the first ascent on August 17, 1956. A Norwegian-American expedition reached the summit in 1970 and a Japanese expedition in 1975. On May 29, 2003, a group of Spanish mountaineers managed to climb it. There have been other ascents recently.
