Oil pump in the semi-arid environment of Talara |
Talara is a Peruvian port city with 91,444 inhabitants (2017). Ten years earlier the population was 83,743. It is the capital of the Talara province in the Piura region .
There is a significant oil industry under the control of the state oil company Petroperu . At the beginning of the 20th century , Talara was a small fishing village, but under the influence of the oil business it quickly developed into a larger city, mainly inhabited by the workers of the oil fields.
The name supposedly goes back to times when Talara was still an insignificant place and, in addition to fishermen and farmers, mainly housed woodcutters. From vamos talar ( spanish we are going to cut wood ) became in time a fixed term vamos Talara ( we go to Talara ) that was passed on to the site.

The climatic conditions underwent dramatic changes for the time of the occurrence of the El Niño climatic phenomenon .
