The district of Chancay is located in the province of San Marcos in the Cajamarca region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on December 8, 1994. It has an area of 68.3 km². The 2017 census counted 2965 residents. In 1993 the population was 3395, in 2007 it was 3297. The district administration is based in the village of Chancay with 541 inhabitants at an altitude of 2670 m (as of 2017). Chancay is about 8 km southeast of the provincial capital San Marcos on the national road 3N.
Geographical location
The district of Chancay is located in the east of the Peruvian Western Cordillera and there in the southwest of the province of San Marcos. The district extends over a hill country north of the rivers of Río Cajamarca and Río Crisnejas .
The Chancay district borders in the south on the Eduardo Villanueva district , in the northwest on the Pedro Gálvez district and in the northeast on the Ichocán district .
