The Pedro Gálvez district is located in the San Marcos province in the Cajamarca region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on December 11, 1982. The district was named after Pedro Gálvez Egúsquiza (1822–1872), a Peruvian politician of the 19th century.
The district has an area of 243 km². The 2017 census counted 19,870 residents. In 1993 the population was 16,350, in 2007 19,118. The seat of the district administration is the provincial capital San Marcos at an altitude of 2251 m with 9182 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The Pedro Gálvez district is located in the east of the Peruvian Western Cordillera and there in the central west of the San Marcos province. The longitudinal extent in the WSW-ONE direction is 30 km. The Río Cajamarca crosses the western part of the district and drains the entire area.
The Pedro Gálvez district borders on the Ichocán , Chancay and Eduardo Villanueva districts to the south, the Cachachi district ( Cajabamba province ) to the southwest, the Jesús and Matara districts (both in the Cajamarca province ) to the west, and the Gregorio district to the north Pita , in the northeast to the José Sabogal district and in the southeast to the José Manuel Quiroz district .
