The Gran Chimú province is located in the La Libertad region in northwestern Peru . The province was founded in 1994 and has an area of ​​1284.77 km². At the 2017 census, 26,892 people lived in the province. Ten years earlier the population was 30,399. The administrative seat is the small town of Cascas .

Geographical location

The province of Gran Chimú is located in the central north of the La Libertad region, about 70 km northeast of the city of Trujillo in the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The province has a lengthwise extension in west-east direction of almost 70 km. The River Chicama (Río Huancay) crosses the western part of the province in a north-westerly direction.

The province of Gran Chimú borders in the north with the provinces Contumazá and Cajamarca (both in the region Cajamarca ), in the east with the province Cajabamba (also in the region Cajamarca), in the south with the province Otuzco and in the west with the province Ascope .

Administrative division

The province of Gran Chimú is divided into the following four districts. The Cascas district is the seat of the provincial administration.
