The Cascas district is located in the Gran Chimú province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was founded on April 25, 1835. It has an area of ​​485.67 km². The 2017 census counted 13,374 residents. In 1993 the population was 13,979, in 2007 14,191. The administrative seat of the district is the provincial capital Cascas, 1274  m high, with 4688 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cascas is located on the Río Cascas, a northern tributary of the Río Chicama .

Geographical location

The Cascas district is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the northwest of the Gran Chimú province. The rivers Río Chuquillanqui and Río Chicama flow along the southern district boundary to the west and drain the area.

The Cascas district is bordered to the west by the San Benito district , to the north by the Contumazá district (both in the Contumazá province ), to the east by the Cospán district ( Cajamarca province ), and to the south by the Lucma , Marmot and Chicama districts ( Ascope province ).
