The Chicama district is located in the Ascope province in the La Libertad region in northwestern Peru . The district has existed since January 2, 1857. The 895.45 km² district had 15,267 inhabitants at the 2017 census. In 1993 the population was 14,176, in 2007 15,056. The administrative seat is the 125 m high city of Chicama . There are also the small towns of Sausal and Chiclín . The River Chicama flows west along the northern district boundary . Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the lowlands. On the slopes of the up to 2200 m high Peruvian Western Cordillera and in the south of the district, there is desert vegetation. The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) leads from Trujillo past Chichama and Chiclín to the north.
Geographical location
The Chicama district is located in the southeast of the Ascope province on the western flank of the Western Peruvian Cordillera. The Chicama district borders on the Chocope , Casa Grande and Ascope districts to the north, the San Benito district ( Contumazá province ) and the Cascas district ( Gran Chimú province ) in the northeast, and the Marmot district (also Gran Chimú province ) in the east , Sinsicap ( province of Otuzco ) and Simbal ( province of Trujillo ), in the south to the district of Huanchaco (also province of Trujillo) and in the west to the district of Santiago de Cao .
