The district of Santiago de Cao is located in the province of Ascope in the region of La Libertad in northwestern Peru . The district of 126.72 km² had 19,204 inhabitants at the 2017 census. In 1993 the population was 19,728, in 2007 19,731. The administrative seat is the m high town of Santiago de Cao with 2090 inhabitants (as of 2017). The largest city in the district is Cartavio with 13,219 inhabitants (as of 2017). There is also the small town of Chiquitoy with 2199 inhabitants (as of 2017). The district is located on the Pacific coast southeast of the Chicama River . It has a coastline of almost 10.5 km. In the extreme southeast there is desert vegetation. Otherwise irrigated agriculture is used.

Geographical location

The Santiago de Cao district is located in the southwest of the Ascope province. It borders in the northwest on the Magdalena de Cao district , in the northeast on the Chicama district and in the southeast on the Huanchaco district ( Trujillo province ).
