The Marmot district is located in the Gran Chimú province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was founded on May 14, 1876. It has an area of 300.25 km². The 2017 census counted 2407 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3115, in 2007 it was 2441. The administrative seat of the district is the 2200 m high village of Compin (or Compín) with 508 inhabitants (as of 2017). Compin is 32 km southeast of the provincial capital Cascas .
Geographical location
The Marmot district is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the southwest of the Gran Chimú province. The district is bounded in the northeast and north by the Río Chicama . In the southwest, a mountain range up to 4290 m high runs along the district boundary.
The district of Marmot borders in the southwest with the district Sinsicap ( province Otuzco ), in the northwest with the district Chicama ( province Ascope ), in the north with the district Cascas , in the northeast with the district Lucma and in the southeast with the district Otuzco (province Otuzco) .
