The province of Sánchez Carrión is located in the La Libertad region in northwestern Peru . The province was named after José Faustino Sánchez Carrión (1787-1825), a Peruvian politician who campaigned for Peru's independence. The province has an area of 2486 km². At the 2017 census, 144,405 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 108,300, in 2007 136,221. The administrative seat is the city of Huamachuco .
Geographical location
The province of Sánchez Carrión is located in the central east of the La Libertad region, about 125 km east-northeast of the city of Trujillo in the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The province has a lengthwise extension in west-east direction of almost 70 km. The Río Marañón River runs along the eastern provincial border. Its left tributaries Río Chusgón and Río Crisnegas (via its right source river Río Condebamba ) drain the area to the northeast.
The province of Sánchez Carrión borders in the north with the province Cajabamba ( region Cajamarca ), in the east with the provinces Bolívar and Pataz , in the south with the province Santiago de Chuco and in the west with the province Otuzco .

The province of Sánchez Carrión is divided into the following eight districts. The Huamachuco district is the seat of the provincial administration.
