The district of Cochorco is located in the province of Sánchez Carrión in the region of La Libertad in western Peru . The district was established on December 13, 1943. It has an area of ​​262 km². The 2017 census counted 8398 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 7731, in 2007 it was 8751. The administrative seat of the district is the 2604  m high village of Aricapampa with 982 inhabitants (as of 2017). Aricapampa is 36 km east of the provincial capital Huamachuco .

Geographical location

The district of Cochorco is located on the eastern edge of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the east of the province of Sánchez Carrión. The lengthwise extension in north-south direction is 28 km, the maximum width is 16 km. The district is located on the west bank of the Río Marañón between the confluence of the Quebrada Uctubamba in the south and that of the Río Gansul in the north.

The district of Cochorco borders in the south and west on the district Chugay , in the north on the district Sartimbamba and in the east on the districts Pataz , Pias and Parcoy (all three in the province of Pataz ).
