The Chugay district is located in the Sánchez Carrión province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was established on December 13, 1943. It has an area of ​​417 km². The 2017 census counted 16,769 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 14,693, in 2007 it was 17,236. The administrative seat of the district is the 3371  m high village of Chugay with 1405 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chugay is located 20 km east of the provincial capital Huamachuco .

Geographical location

The Chugay district is located on the eastern flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the central east of the Sánchez Carrión province. In the extreme southeast, the district extends to the Río Marañón . The Río Chusgón , a left tributary of the Río Marañón, flows north along the western district boundary .

The district of Chugay borders in the south on the districts Sitabamba ( province Santiago de Chuco ) and Sarín , in the west on the districts Curgos , Huamachuco and Marcabal , in the northeast on the district Sartímbamba , in the east on the district Cochorco and in the far south-east on the districts Parcoy and Huayo (both in the Pataz province ).
