The Sartimbamba district is located in the Sánchez Carrión province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was founded on February 12, 1821. It has an area of ​​394.4 km². The 2017 census counted 16,769 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 10,889, in 2007 12,648. The administrative seat of the district is the 2697  m high village of Sartimbamba with 610 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sartimbamba is located 35 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Huamachuco .

Geographical location

The Sartimbamba district is located on the eastern flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the northeast of the Sánchez Carrión province. The Río Marañón flows along the eastern district boundary to the north, its left tributary Río Chusgón along the north-western and northern district boundary to the east. The Río Gansul, another left tributary of the Río Marañón, flows through the south of the district in a southeastern direction and forms the southern district boundary in the lower reaches.

The district of Sartimbamba borders in the south on the district of Cochorco , in the southwest on the district Chugay , in the west on the district Marcabal , in the north on the district Sitacocha ( province Cajabamba , region Cajamarca ), in the northeast on the districts Bambamarca and Condormarca (both in the Province of Bolívar ) and in the southeast to the District of Pataz ( Province of Pataz ).
