The Sitacocha district is located in the Cajabamba Province in the Cajamarca region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on February 11, 1855. It has an area of ​​589.94 km². The 2017 census counted 7535 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 8,985, in 2007 it was 8,717. The district administration is located in the small town of Lluchubamba at an altitude of 2956  m with 1,896 inhabitants (as of 2017). Lluchubamba is located about 15 km northeast of the provincial capital Cajabamba .

Geographical location

The Sitacocha district is located in the Andean highlands east of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the east of the Cajabamba province. It has an approximately circular shape with a diameter of about 17 km. The Río Marañón runs along the eastern district boundary to the north. Its left tributaries, Río Chusgon and Río Crisnegas, form the southeastern and northern district boundaries , respectively.

The district of Sitacocha borders in the southwest with the districts Cajabamba and Condebamba , in the northwest with the districts Ichocán and José Manuel Quiroz (both in the province of San Marcos ), in the north with the district José Sabogal (also in the province of San Marcos), in the east to the districts of Bolívar and Bambamarca (both in the Bolívar province ) and to the south to the Sartimbamba and Marcabal districts (both in the Sánchez Carrión province ).
