The Sitabamba District is located in the Santiago de Chuco Province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was founded on November 3, 1900. It has an area of ​​315 km². The 2017 census counted 3,625 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4400, in 2007 it was 3754. The district administration is located in the 3063  m high village of Sitabamba with 848 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sitabamba is located 50 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Santiago de Chuco .

Geographical location

The Sitabamba district extends over the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the far east of the Santiago de Chuco province. The Río Marañón flows north along the eastern district boundary. Its left tributary Río Sarín drains the west of the district to the north.

The Sitabamba district borders in the southwest with the districts Mollepata , Mollebamba and Cachicadán , in the north with the districts Sarín and Chugay (both in the province Sánchez Carrión ), in the east with the district Huayo ( province Pataz ) and in the south with the district Pampas ( Pallasca Province ).
