The Pampas district is located in the Pallasca province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was established on December 16, 1918. It has an area of 440 km². The 2017 census counted 4,205 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 5013, in 2007 it was 7079. The district administration is located in the small town of Pampas, 3190 m high, with 1826 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pampas is located 25 km northeast of the provincial capital Cabana . The Pasto Bueno Mine is located near the pampas.
Geographical location
The Pampas district is located in the extreme northeast of the Pallasca province. The continental watershed runs roughly in the middle of the district . The headwaters of the Río Tablachaca - Río Pampas (or Río Plata), Río Sarin and Río Conchucos - drain the western part to the west. The Río Marañón flows north along the eastern district boundary .
The Pampas district borders in the southwest on the Lacabamba district , in the northwest on the Mollepata district , in the north on the Sitabamba district (the two aforementioned districts belong to the province of Santiago de Chuco ), in the east on the districts of Huayo and Chillia (both in the province Pataz ) and in the south to the district of Conchucos .
