The Mollepata district is located in the Santiago de Chuco province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was founded on April 25, 1861. It has an area of ​​69 km². The 2017 census counted 2,458 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2864, in 2007 it was 2748. The district administration is located in the 2680  m high village of Mollepata with 168 inhabitants (as of 2017). Mollepata is about 25 km east-southeast of the provincial capital Santiago de Chuco .

Geographical location

The district of Mollepata is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the east of the province of Santiago de Chuco. The Río Sarín, the right source river of the Río Tablachaca , flows south along the eastern district boundary and drains the area. In the south and southwest, the district is bounded by the Río Tablachaca and Río Angasmarca.

The Mollepata district borders in the southwest on the Angasmarca district , in the west on the Mollebamba district , in the north on the Sitabamba district , in the east on the Pampas district ( Pallasca province ) and in the south on the Pallasca district (also in the Pallasca province).
