The district of Santiago de Chuco is located in the province of Santiago de Chuco in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district has an area of 1079 km². The 2017 census counted 18,311 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 18,642, in 2007 19,860. The administrative seat of the district is the provincial capital Santiago de Chuco, 3099 m high, with 6821 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The district of Santiago de Chuco is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the southwest of the province of Santiago de Chuco. The north-south extension is almost 60 km. The Río Tablachaca and its right tributary Río Huaychaca flow south along the eastern district boundary. In the south, the district extends to the confluence of the Río Tablachaca in the Río Santa .
The district of Santiago de Chuco borders in the southwest with the district Chao ( province Virú ), in the northwest with the districts Huaso ( province Julcán ) and Quiruvilca , in the northeast with the districts Cachicadán and Santa Cruz de Chuca and in the southeast with the districts Bolognesi , Tauca and Santa Rosa (all three in the province of Pallasca ).
