Peter Whiteside

Peter Whiteside (born June 23, 1952 in Middlesbrough , † April 14, 2020 in Peterborough ) was a British modern pentathlon .

biography

Peter Whiteside grew up in Marton , a borough of Middlesbrough . At the 1980 Summer Olympics , he took part in both modern pentathlon competitions. In the individual he finished 21st and in the team classification he was eighth with the British team. Whiteside was particularly good at swimming; so he swam the English Channel twice . He was a trained mechanic and served as a soldier in the British Army .

After his career, the young athlete trained in fencing and eventually moved to Cyprus with his wife Linda in 2007, where the couple opened a sports nutrition store. A year later, a brain tumor was diagnosed and surgically removed. At the age of 60 he took part in two triathlons in Cyprus. However, a second tumor was found in 2016 and was removed, but its condition deteriorated and Whiteside suffered a brain injury. The couple returned to England and Peter Whiteside was subsequently treated at the Eagle Wood Neurological Care Center in Peterborough. There he died in April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic after being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
