The Puquio District is located in the Lucanas Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​864 km². The 2017 census counted 14,439 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 12,004, in 2007 13,870. The seat of the provincial and district administration is the 3214  m high city of Puquio with 12,982 inhabitants (as of 2017). Puquio is 170 km south of the regional capital Ayacucho .

Geographical location

The district of Puquio is located in the Andean highlands in the central east of the province of Lucanas. The Río Acarí , a tributary of the Pacific Ocean, has its headwaters in the district and drains the area to the south. The continental watershed runs along the northern district boundary .

The Puquio district borders on the Chaviña and San Pedro districts to the south, the San Cristóbal and San Juan and Lucanas districts to the west, the Carmen Salcedo and Chipao districts to the north and the Coracora district ( Parinacochas province ) to the east .
