The district of Aucara is located in the province of Lucanas in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​872 km². The 2017 census counted 2963 residents. In 1993 the population was 2569, in 2007 it was 4400. The district administration is located in the 3220  m high village of Aucara with 1038 inhabitants (as of 2017). Aucara is about 50 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Puquio .

Geographical location

The district of Aucara is located in the Andean highlands in the central north of the province of Lucanas. The longitudinal extension in WNW-ESE direction is 57 km, the maximum width is 30 km. The Río Sondondo (also Río Lucanas) drains the area to the northeast.

The district of Aucara is bordered to the south by the districts of Cabana , Lucanas and San Pedro de Palco , to the northwest by the districts of Sancos and Sacsamarca (both in the province of Huanca Sancos ) and to the northeast by the districts of Canaria and Apongo (both in the province of Víctor Fajardo ) and in the east to the Santa Ana de Huaycahuacho district .
