The district of San Pedro de Palco is located in the province of Lucanas in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on July 8, 1964. It has an area of ​​520 km². The 2017 census counted 1001 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1681, in 2007 it was 1552. The seat of the district administration is the 2702  m high village of San Pedro de Palco with 198 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Pedro de Palco is 65 km northwest of the provincial capital Puquio .

Geographical location

The district of San Pedro de Palco is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the central northwest of the Lucanas Province. The longitudinal extent in SW-NE direction is 38 km, the maximum width almost 22 km. The continental divide runs through the district. The northeast is drained to the north via the Río Urubamba, a right tributary of the Río Caracha . The southwest is drained by the Río Palco, a tributary of the Río Ingenio , to the southwest.

The district of San Pedro de Palco borders in the southwest with the district Otoca , in the southwest with the district Ocaña , in the northwest with the district Laramate , in the north with the district Sancos ( province Huanca Sancos ), in the northeast with the district Aucara and in the southeast the district of Lucanas .
