The Marcona district is located in the Nasca Province in the Ica region in southwest Peru . The district founded on May 2, 1955 has an area of 2009 km² (according to other sources 1946 km²). At the 2017 census, 15,981 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 12,988, in 2007 12,876. The district administration is based in the coastal town of San Juan de Marcona , located in the south of the district, with 15,933 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Juan de Marcona is located 156 km east-southeast of the provincial capital Nasca .
Geographical location
The Marcona district extends over the south of the Nasca province. The northern district boundary runs close to the 15th southern parallel. The district has an approximately 90 km long section on the Pacific coast . The San Fernando National Reserve extends there (Spanish: Reserva nacional San Fernando ). The district extends up to 65 km inland. The area consists almost entirely of desert. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) from Palpa to Yauca crosses the east of the district in a southerly direction.
The Marcona district borders on the Changuillo , Nasca and Vista Alegre districts to the north, the Santa Lucía district ( Lucanas province ) to the east, and the Bella Unión and Lomas districts (both in the Caravelí province ) to the southeast .
