The district of Chaparra is located in the province of Caravelí in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on June 22, 1825. It has an area of ​​1502 km². The 2017 census counted 3,806 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1742, in 2007 3846. The seat of the district administration is the 600  m high village Achanizo with 337 inhabitants (as of 2017). Achanizo is located on the Río Chaparra, almost 65 km west of the provincial capital Caravelí . The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) runs along the Pacific coast .

Geographical location

The Chaparra district is located in the central east of the Caravelí province. The district has an almost 44 km long coastline on the Pacific Ocean and extends about 47 km inland. The Río Chaparra crosses the district in a south-westerly direction and finally flows into the sea. The area consists mostly of desert.

The Chaparra district borders in the northwest to the districts Chala and Huanuhuanu , in the northeast on the district Quicacha and on the southeast by the district Atico .
