The Chala district is located in the Caravelí Province in the Arequipa region in southwest Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. The Chala district has an area of ​​378.38 km² (according to other sources: 341 km²). The 2017 census counted 9,240 residents. In 1993 the population was 2603, in 2007 it was 5194. The seat of the district administration is the coastal town of Chala with 7940 inhabitants (as of 2017). There is also the village of Chala Viejo, located on the Quebrada de Chala, 10 km from the sea. The area is almost entirely desert. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) runs along the sea coast.

Geographical location

The Chala district is centrally located on the coast of the Caravelí province. It has an approximately 12 km long coastline on the Pacific Ocean and extends up to 29 km inland. The Chala district includes the lower river valley of the mostly dry Quebrada de Chala. In the west rise the hills Lomas de Atiquipa, in the east the hills Lomas de Capac.

The Chala district is bordered to the west by the district Atiquipa , on the north by the district Huanuhuanu and the east by the district Chaparra .
