During her tenure, the institution received more funding than in the previous two terms combined. In 2015 she became general secretary of the PAN in Puebla and was considered one of the most influential women in the party.

Candidacy for governorship

In 2018 Martha Érika Alonso Hidalgo ran for governorship in Puebla, standing for the "Por Puebla al Frente" coalition, which was formed from the parties PAN, PRI , Movimiento Ciudadano and two regional parties. For the candidacy, she is said to have prevailed in an internal party poll against the former mayor of the city of Puebla , Eduardo Rivera Pérez .

During the election campaign, she was criticized for trying to inherit her husband Rafael Moreno Valle as governor (2011-2017). In the meantime, she tried to distance herself from him by not appearing at her election campaign events and by not using his last name, in contrast to her tenure at the DIF. However, she was supported by several members of his election campaign and government team and the coalition program is said to have carried his signature.

Martha Érika Alonso Hidalgo won the election on July 1, 2018 against Miguel Barbosa Huerta and his coalition "Juntos Haremos Historia" as well as two other candidates and was the first woman to hold the post of governor in Puebla and the seventh woman nationwide.

death

On December 24, 2018, ten days after taking office, the helicopter on the way to Mexico City with Martha Érika Alonso Hidalgo, her husband Rafael Moreno Valle and other PAN politicians crashed near the town of Santa María Coronango, north of the city Exit Puebla . All five inmates were killed. The President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ordered a state investigation; this was carried out by the highest aviation authority and the public prosecutor's office with the participation of the manufacturers of the AgustaWestland AW109S Grand helicopter, Agusta , and the engines, Pratt and Whitney , as well as with the support of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB ).

The investigation report came to the conclusion on March 27, 2020 that the helicopter "should not have been flying" because there was a pre-existing problem with a stability system on the helicopter that both the operator and the maintenance crew knew about; there was no sign of a collision. The government suspended the helicopter company and the company responsible for maintenance; the case was handed over to the prosecutor.
