The Atico district is located in the Caravelí province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on December 9, 1897. It has an area of 3094 km². The 2017 census counted 5753 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3618, in 2007 it was 4164. The seat of the district administration is the coastal city of La Florida (also known as Atico ) with 4844 inhabitants. La Florida is about 58 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Caravelí .
Geographical location
The Atico district is located in the extreme southeast of the Caravelí province. The area is almost entirely desert. The Río Atico crosses the district in a southerly direction and finally flows into the sea. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) runs along the sea coast. From La Florida a road leads north to Caravelí.
The district of Atico borders in the west on the district Chaparra , in the northwest on the district Quicacha , in the extreme north on the district Cahuacho , in the northeast on the district Caravelí and in the east on the districts Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel and Ocoña (both in the province Camaná ) .
