Bahman Golbarnezhad ( Persian بهمن گلبارنژاد, * June 12, 1968 in Abadan ; † September 17, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a physically disabled Iranian athlete who was active as a weightlifter and cyclist . In cycling he started in class C4 .

Bahman Golbarnezhad was born in Abadan. When the city became a frontline city ​​in the Iraq-Iran war , he left his place of birth and fled to Shiraz . He was drafted as a soldier; While on patrol in 1988, he stepped on a land mine and lost his left lower leg.

Golbarnezhad began his sporting career as a wrestler and then became a weightlifter. As such, he won twelve gold medals and one silver medal in various competitions. He had to give up weightlifting due to a shoulder injury and switched to cycling in 2006.

In December 2010, he was able to secure the bronze medal in the road race of class C4-5 at the Para-Asian Games held in the Chinese city ​​of Guangzhou . In 2012 Golbarnezhad qualified for the Paralympics in London . Two years later, his wife died of cancer .

Four years later, at the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , Golbarnezhad, the only Iranian cyclist at these games, wanted to finally win a medal as a cyclist and dedicate it to his wife. In the individual time trial on the road, however, he only finished 14th and last. On September 17, 2016, the athlete started in the road race in classes C4–5. During the race, he fell and hit his head against a rock and suffered serious injuries. He suffered cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital and died after admission.

There was a minute's silence for him at the graduation ceremony. It was the first death in Paralympic history. The Iranian flag in the Olympic Village was hoisted at half mast . The Iranian sitting volleyball team dedicated its gold medal to him.

Golbarnezhad leaves two sons, one of whom lives in Europe.
