The International Paralympic Committee ( IPC ) is an amalgamation of international disabled sports associations and national organizations. It was founded on September 22, 1989 in Düsseldorf and is based in Bonn ( Adenauerallee 212/214 ). The number of members grew to over 200 in 2015. The president of the committee was Robert Steadward from Canada until 2001 . He was followed by Sir Philip Craven as President, former Paralympic participant and President of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation. Andrew Parsons assumed the presidency on September 8, 2017 . There is close contact between the IPC and the IOC .

As the most important competitions on a global level for disabled athletes, the IPC organizes the Paralympic Games every four years . It is also responsible for hosting various IPC World Championships , which are the most important global competitions in disabled sports after the Paralympic Games and before the IWAS World Games .

The IPC is also responsible for hosting and organizing some continental competitions (such as the IPC European Championships ).

Every two years the IPC also awards the Paralympic Order , the Paralympic Sport Award , the Paralympic Media Award and the Paralympic Scientific Award for special achievements relating to the Paralympic movement.
