At the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , medals were awarded in a total of one competition in wheelchair rugby . The decision was made on September 18, 2016 in the Rio Olympic Arena .

Classification

In each game two teams with four field players and eight substitutes each play. All players are quadriplegic and have disabilities in three or four of their extremities. Each player has a certain number of points that express their freedom of movement in the wheelchair and thus the degree of their disability. The classification in steps of 0.5 ranges from 0.5 (most severe impairment) to 3.5 (weakest impairment). The total number of points of all five players on a team on the field must not exceed eight points. Four quarters of eight minutes each are played. In the event of a tie, there is a three-minute extension.

Qualified teams

Wheelchair rugby is played as a mixed tournament, so there is only one competition.
