Stéphane Houdet (born November 20, 1970 in Saint-Nazaire ) is a French wheelchair tennis player and former golfer .

Life

After a motorcycle accident in August 1996, Stéphane Houdet had to have a thigh amputated, which left him in a wheelchair. After graduating in veterinary medicine in 1994 , he received his doctorate in this subject in 1998. He is the father of two pairs of twins.

Career

From 2001 to 2006, Stéphane Houdet was the French number one handicapped in golf. In 2003 and 2004 he was also one of the top Europeans.

Stéphane Houdet has been active in wheelchair tennis in both singles and doubles since 2008. In both disciplines, he already led the world rankings: In singles he achieved this for the first time on June 11, 2012, in doubles on January 26, 2009. At the Australian Open , he reached the final three times in singles, while he won the French Open twice and won the US Open once. He won the Wheelchair Tennis Masters in 2011. In doubles, he won the Australian Open five times, the French Open six times, Wimbledon three times and the US Open four times. In the 2014 season he won all four tournaments and thus managed a Grand Slam . He won the double Masters in 2006, 2007 and 2013. In 2012 he was ITF Wheelchair World Champion .

So far, Stéphane Houdet has participated twice in the Paralympic Games . In 2008 he won the gold medal in doubles in Beijing together with Michaël Jeremiasz ; in singles he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. With Jeremiasz, he won the bronze medal in doubles in London in 2012 , while he won the silver medal in singles.

For his success he was accepted into the Legion of Honor as a knight on January 19, 2009 .
