FIA fence

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An FIA fence is a barrier element on racetracks that is intended to protect people behind it from parts that fly around in a collision. Usually it is located on both sides of the racetrack, above the (three or fourfold) guard rails and any energy absorbers such as tire stacks. It consists of a coarse wire mesh and several horizontally running steel cables at a distance of 25 to 50 cm. Typically, the wire ropes are not taut. The total height is 280 to 450 cm. If there is a cantilever , it points to the racetrack.

Ideally, the FIA fence in conjunction with the guard rails prevents entire vehicles from leaving the race track. In unfavorable conditions such as obtuse angles of impact and high speed, the supports cannot withstand the forces and buckle.

Since the FIA fence is easy to climb over thanks to the horizontal steel cables, a spectator restraint system must be installed on the audience side.
