Hockey is Diversity is a German non-profit association. The purpose of the association is integration in Germany.

Founding history

Hockey is Diversity eV (HiD) is a non-profit international network of current and former amateur and professional ice hockey players based in Berlin. The non-profit association was founded in 2010 by former DEL players Martin Hyun and Peter Goldbach. Martin Hyun was the first Bundesliga professional of Korean origin in the DEL as well as Germany's junior national player.

The intercultural association is committed to diversity as the foundation for respectful interaction with one another and actively campaigns against racism, right-wing extremism and discrimination. This is how the association positions itself clearly with its principles in the Black Lives Matter movement.

The aim of the association is to draw attention to the ethnic diversity in society that goes beyond sporting boundaries in order to sensitize people to intercultural issues. Diversity, which has long been viewed as an enrichment in sport as a melting pot for people of different ethnicities, cultures and religions, should also be transferred to society. The association promotes international attitudes and tolerance in all areas of culture and the idea of ​​international understanding, civic engagement in favor of charitable purposes, such as intercultural awareness, peace and dialogue culture and social harmony, equal rights for women and men (equality of Genders) as well as sports, especially ice hockey, para-ice hockey, floorball, inline & skater hockey.

In general, sport has a central social function, which is supposed to help break down prejudices and improve the understanding of people from different cultures. With the help of ice sports, the initiative has set itself the goal of stimulating dialogues, entering into cooperation and contributing to development and peace between actors, NGOs and civil society.

Working method

The association works in the areas of awareness-raising and project work. The association designs projects and initiates public campaigns for a new coexistence, which is also supported by numerous celebrities. The initiative organizes regular discussions, school action days and readings across all projects.

Hockey is Diversity is primarily involved in the field of integration through sport. Elaborately produced commercials that advertise a diverse society and show the Turkish-born German national player Sinan Akdağ , the Croatian-born goalkeeper Danijel Kovačič and Russian-German Mikhail Kozhevnikov , as well as the initiators Martin Hyun and Peter Goldbach, were presented on the video cubes of all 14 Bundesliga stadiums. In addition to integration, the initiative also aims to support disadvantaged children and young people from socially disadvantaged families. In October 2007, Hyun launched an educational sponsorship project. The aim was to bring the young people into contact with people who have a similar résumé to those affected and who have nevertheless managed to assert themselves in society. Young people from socially disadvantaged families are regularly invited to ice hockey games and talk to hockey-is-diversity ambassadors.

Since 2012, the initiative has been awarding an integration award to motivate players to get involved in the city in which they play. The 2012 award winner was German international Sinan Akdağ . The ice hockey professional with Turkish descent was under contract as a defender with the Krefeld Penguins from 2007 and has been strongly committed to the topic of integration for years.

In addition, the association goes to schools and discusses the advantages of a diverse society and life goals with the students. An international ice hockey tournament is to take place every year. In cooperation with the Eisbären Eppelheim ice sports club, the first international Hockey is Diversity U-16 school tournament was held in Eppelheim. With the Eisbären Berlin Juniors, the international Hockey is Diversity Trophy is held every year in the Berlin Wellblechpalast , in which U16 and U17 teams from Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Sweden, Latvia, the USA and Canada have already participated.
