Martin (Jong-bum) Hyun (born May 4, 1979 in Krefeld ) is a former German ice hockey player of Korean origin and author who, in addition to his sporting successes, is also known for his statements on the subject of integration . He was the first Korean-born ice hockey player in the German Ice Hockey League . From 2015 to 2018, Hyun was the sports technical director for ice hockey and sledge hockey at the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Career

In his youth, Hyun played for the Krefeld Ice Skating Club (KEV), to whose amateur team he belonged from the 1995/96 season . After good performance in the Krefeld Pinguine farm team , Hyun was appointed to the professional squad in the 1996/97 season by the then head coach of the penguins, Miroslav Berek . The 17-year-old striker scored two goals in a preparatory game against the Duisburg Füchse . Hyun spent most of the season in the penguins' farm team and finished with twelve points in 27 games.

Equipped with a production license for the Krefeld Penguins, Hyun moved to the United States. There he played for the renowned high school team Benilde-St. Margaret's in the State of Minnesota and Northwood Prep in Lake Placid in the State of New York . In Minnesota and New York, Hyun has always been one of the top performers on his team. After a successful season in New York, Hyun was courted by numerous college teams, including Colby College and the College of the Holy Cross , which are part of Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Ultimately, Hyun decided to play for the St. Michael's Purple Knights of St. Michael's College , Vermont . At the Purple Knights, too, Hyun was one of the top performers on his team and was able to score 15 points in 25 games in his rookie season . In his penultimate season with St. Michael's College Purple Knights, he became Division II Northeast Champion of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association .

After completing his political studies at St. Michael's College in Vermont, Hyun moved to the Belgian Eredivisie , where he was signed by the Chiefs Leuven . In Belgium, Hyun enrolled for a master's degree in International Relations at the University of Kent at Canterbury, England. In the 2004/05 season he moved to his home club Krefeld Pinguine in the German Ice Hockey League . In memory of the guest worker history of his Korean parents, who came to Germany in 1970 and 1971, he wore the number 71. Hyun played his first DEL game on September 17, 2004 against the Kölner Haie . This made Hyun officially the first player with Korean roots to ever play a DEL game.

From 1994 to 1998, the right winger went through all junior national teams of the German Ice Hockey Federation and took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 1995 in Moncton, Canada in the province of New Brunswick . Despite other offers, including from the newly formed Asia League Ice Hockey , Hyun ended his young professional career in order to orientate himself in his new professional career.

Hyun is a political scientist and holds a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from the University of Kent at Canterbury, England . He completed his bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in international business at St. Michael's College in the American state of Vermont. After Hyun finished his active sports career, he started working in the parliamentary office of former South Korean Minister of Health and Social Affairs Kim Chong-in. Due to his commitment to international understanding between Germany and Korea, Hyun was appointed to the reunification council of Korean President Roh Moo-hyun (Advisory Council on Democratic and Peaceful Unification) in 2005 . During the state visit of South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun on 11 April 2005 by President Hyun was Horst Koehler to Schloss Charlottenburg invited. Life

Martin Hyun grew up as the middle of two siblings in Krefeld. Hyun has lived in Berlin since 2008, completed his doctorate on the subject of Korean migrant workers in Germany in 2018 and married his long-time girlfriend in December 2014.
