The University of Kent , until 2003 University of Kent at Canterbury , is a British university near Canterbury , Kent .

The central main campus is located in the district of Canterbury in the rural county of Kent in South East England ; other buildings are in the nearby towns of Chatham (Medway Campus) and Tonbridge (both also Kent). The university also has postgraduate centers in Brussels and Paris .

19,665 students are currently enrolled there . Of these, around 12,000 are full-time and 6,000 part-time students. In addition, around 600 people are employed as lecturers and other ( research ) personnel.

history

A university foundation in the old city of Canterbury, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury , the spiritual head of the Church of England , was considered as early as 1947. The main reason for this was the increasing number of students. It wasn't until 1959, however, before the initiative was taken and the search for a site for the campus began. In 1962 an area had been found near Beverly Farm, on the outskirts of Canterbury.

Teaching began in October 1965. Marina, Duchess of Kent , became the college's first female chancellor in 1966 .

In the 1990s and 2000s, expansion took place outside the central campus, to Tonbridge and Medway. Therefore, in 2003 "at Canterbury" was deleted from the university name.

structure

The Canterbury Campus is located on a hill about 2 miles (3 km ) from the center of the episcopal city. It extends over an area of ​​approximately 300 acres (1.2 km² ).

Here are five of the university's colleges named after famous British or American personalities:

• Eliot College (Eliot died on the day the university and college was founded, January 4, 1965)

• Rutherford College (founded 1966)
• Keynes College (1968)
• Darwin College (1970)
• Woolf College (2008)

The Medway Campus has been located on the River Medway at Chatham Dockyard , approximately 30 miles (46 km) northwest of Canterbury, since 2004 , and the Tonbridge Campus (since 1982, constantly expanding) is in Tonbridge, approximately 43 miles (70 km) southwest of Canterbury.

The university is divided into three faculties, one each for the humanities , social sciences and natural sciences .

At the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research , the Center for Parenting Culture Studies , which is unique in the English-speaking world, has existed since 2007 , which has set itself the task of promoting interdisciplinary research on the current culture of parenting .
