Black ribbon (elastic armband)

A black ribbon is a black fabric that expresses official sympathy in the event of death. It can be a long textile ribbon , a bow or an armband. For example, it is attached to the flag as a national symbol when mourning flags are displayed . In Germany, black ribbon may only be attached to the flag if it is not possible to set the flag at half-mast.

Historical use

Up until the 1970s , it was common in Germany for men in mourning (six weeks or a year) to attach a hand-wide piece of mourning ribbon to the left sleeve of non-black outerwear. Black outerwear and possibly a headgear was common for women.

Mourning ribbons were worn in a very similar way in Austria on the occasion of the death of a very close family member: Halfway up the upper arm, often as an elastic loop over the sleeve of street clothing, i.e. coat or jacket - in the 1950s it was more than 8 cm wide, around 1980 it was rare only half as wide. Also as a narrow textile strip across the top right corner (of the picture frame or the glazing) of a picture of a deceased person, for example a portrait of a company founder or the Federal President in the classroom of a public school.

Examples of current usage

Not only flags, but also vehicles are sometimes equipped with them to express compassion. For example, after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, many BOS vehicles (e.g. fire and rescue vehicles) were marked with a mourning ribbon.

Worn as a small bow on clothing, the mourning ribbon expresses compassion, one's own dismay and respect. It is mostly worn by people who are not related to the deceased person, so it is an individual symbol of grief .

Black, elastic bandages are also used in team sports (for example in football when a teammate dies). After the death of Robert Enke , the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga played on the following day with black ribbon. Also, after the earthquake in Japan in 2011 , black ribbon was used.

Another example of funeral florets is found on the wreaths at funerals. These piles are often provided with a woven or printed inscription such as "To the last greeting" or "In mourning, yours ...". In the case of official wreath-laying (e.g. at memorials, to honor the dead, etc.) by politicians, it is common for the wreath to be carried by other people or already in the intended place, the person responsible for laying the wreath according to the protocol (e.g. . a head of state or government representative) then symbolically only arranges the mourning ribbon.
