action

Ben Randall is one of the U.S. Coast Guard's most experienced and respected lifeguards and has rescued hundreds of people. But in a serious accident on the high seas, he has to watch helplessly as all his comrades, including his friend Carl Billings, are killed. Shortly afterwards, Ben is transferred to the Coast Guard Academy to train young lifeguards. He is characterized by particularly hard and innovative training methods, which are intended to make it clear to the candidates how an assignment feels in an emergency. He does a particularly hard training with the "master athlete" Jake Fischer, who is developing into an excellent lifeguard. Above all, he makes it clear to Fischer that team spirit is more important than setting records. Jake passes his final exam and is transferred to the Kodiak , Alaska Coast Guard , where Ben is also stationed, after declaring himself ready for action again. During a test flight, an emergency arises in which Ben suffers a breakdown and is unable to intervene in the mission. He realizes that he is no longer up to his job and finally quits his job. Shortly thereafter, he learns of an accident on a rescue mission - Jake was trapped in a sinking fishing trawler . With no other rescuers available, Ben sets out to save Jake. He manages to free Jake. When Jake tries to be lifted into the rescue helicopter by winch, the steel cable is tearing. Knowing that the rope can no longer hold the weight of both people, Ben breaks away from the rope. Jake manages to catch the falling Ben with one hand, calling him "I will not let go". With the words "I know", Ben opens his glove and falls into the ocean. Jake wants to go back immediately, but is told that Ben couldn't have survived the fall, that they are unwilling to lose two swimmers and that there is no way to get Ben back into the helicopter in view of the defective winch.

Ben was found neither dead nor alive. There are legends about the legendary lifeguard Ben Randall, according to which he is said to have reached the Aleutians by swimming. For Jake, however, it is clear that Ben has now become the legendary man of the sea who carries drowning people to the surface of the water, where they can be rescued by the Coast Guard.

criticism

“The dramatic film adventure wants to set a monument to the nameless helpers and at the same time meet a basic patriotic need. Despite many clichés, the film succeeds in elevating the story into a mystical realm and appealing to the belief in salvation. "

“Every second counts - The Guardian is a film that pretends you can do everything right. Davis needs a lot of water, sinking ships, exploding helicopters, two supermen and languishing women. Still, no, that's precisely why you don't believe him. "

background

The American Coast Guard on a rescue operation
  • For the scene that takes place in Kodiak , Alaska , more than 27 tons of ice were used to reproduce this polar world as accurately as possible at the location in Elizabeth City , North Carolina .
  • Much of the film is set on the high seas. Most of the filming took place in a huge wave pool that had been specially built for the film.
  • One student in the film is swimmer Mark Gangloff , who won gold at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .
  • Clancy Brown again plays a character named Captain Hadley, as in The Condemned .
  • “Maggies Hangar”, the pub in the film, was actually the rock'n roll cafe of famous guitarist James Burton , who also played with Elvis Presley, in Shreveport . After the film, however, Burton decided to continue running the café under the film name as "Maggie's Hangar". In the film itself, Burton can be seen in the background as the guitarist of the band playing there.
  • The training methods shown in the film largely correspond to reality, such as B. the liberation grips, which the lifeguards working in Germany must also master or the methods of towing a person.
  • When Emily Thomas introduces herself to Jake in Maggie's Hangar, she says her name is Daisy Buchanan. Daisy Buchanan is a fictional character from the book The Great Gatsby .
