Fiction is the eighth studio album by the Swedish melodic death metal band Dark Tranquility . The album was released on April 20, 2007 ( Europe ) and April 17, 2007 ( North America ) via Century Media .
Emergence
After all previous dark tranquility albums were produced by Frederik Nordström, the band broke new ground with Fiction. The music was recorded in various studios between October and November 2006. Guitar and vocals were recorded in Rogue Music and Nacksving Studios, bass and electronics in Rogue Music Studio and drums in IF Studio.
The song Inside the Particle Storm was written entirely by guitarist Niklas Sundin. Sundin is also responsible for the album's artwork. For the first time since the Haven album (2000), Mikael Stanne sings with his clear voice again. On Fiction you can hear the clear voice on Misery's Crown and The Mundane and the Magic .
The final song, The Mundane and the Magic , features the Theater of Tragedy singer Nell Sigland. For the first time since UnDo Control (from the album Projector , 1999), a female singer can be heard on a dark tranquility album. Keyboardist Martin Brändström made contact with Sigland. In addition to his work for Dark Tranquility, Brändström is a live keyboardist at Tiamat and met Sigland on a tour together.
The album was mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen. The finished recordings were sent by the band without comment and no band member was present in Madsen's Antfarm studio during the mixing process.
The song Focus Shift was uploaded to the Myspace site on February 1, 2007 , and a video clip was made for this song . It was directed by Roger Johansson, who previously directed the video clips for Lost to Apathy and The New Built .
Lyric background
According to singer Mikael Stanne, the album title Fiction sums up the overall textual concept of the album. "It's about not fleeing from your problems or blocking them out, but rather drawing strength from them in order to create something new.") In The Lesser Faith (original working title was SignifiCunt ) Stanne deals with the phenomenon that many people rely on higher powers instead of taking their lives into their own hands. At Icipher , Stanne describes his observations that the behavior of many people is dictated by their fears. He also explained the following about the album title: “On the one hand, I didn't want my lyrics to get too personal this time, so I created fictional characters for the record onto which I could project my worries and problems. On the other hand, "Fiction" partially sums up the overall textual concept. "()
Versions
The regular CD contains the ten tracks listed below. In Japan and Australia the album contains a bonus track each ( A Closer End and Winter Triangle ). In addition, fiction was released as a record . The album also comes with the LP as a CD. As with the previous character , the LP has a different cover.
There is also a limited CD / DVD package. The DVD contains the video clips for Focus Shift and The New Build (a song from the previous album Character ), a studio report, live recordings, wallpapers , a screen saver and a patch. The booklet of this limited version is 20 pages longer than that of the normal version. Last but not least, the limited version is delivered in a transparent slipcase. Part of the first edition of the Special Edition has an error, so the screensaver cannot be opened there. The band makes a working version available on their website.
