Character is the seventh album by the Swedish melodic death metal band Dark Tranquility . The album was released on January 24, 2005 via Century Media .
Emergence
During the songwriting, the band focused on making the new songs more technical and complex than on the previous album Damage Done . The aim was to get more attention from the listener. The focus was on aggression, so singer Mikael Stanne no longer worked with clear vocals on this album.
Guitar, bass and vocals were recorded in the studio "The Room", the electronics in the studio "Rogue Music" and the drums in studio Fredman. The album was mixed by Frederik Nordström. The mastering was done by Peter In de Betou. The band acted as producer. Video clips were shot for the songs Lost to Apathy and The Endless Feed , directed and produced by Roger Johansson.
There was about a year between the completion of the recordings and the publication. The previous studio album Damage Done was the last from the old contract with Century Media. When the album was completely recorded, the band's management began to negotiate with various record companies. Eventually the band signed a new deal with the old record company Century Media. Since Century Media's release schedule for the fall of 2004 was already full, the release was postponed to January 2005.

According to the guitarist, the album title Character results from the various song titles that reflect different behavior and behavior. Each song is a certain part of the character.
The song Lost to Apathy , previously released as an EP , is about indifference, resignation and the feeling of isolation in a confusing world.
Versions
Character was released in three different versions. In addition to the regular CD version, there is a digipak that contains the video clip for the song Lost to Apathy and four other live videos. The album was also released as an LP . All three versions have different cover art, all designed by Niklas Sundin .

Japan edition

reception
In Sweden, the album debuted at number three on the album charts and number one on the metal charts. In Finland, Character was number 30, in Italy number 57 and Germany number 83. In addition, the album was number one in the Greek metal charts and number 39 in the British rock charts.
Lost-to-Apathy EP
The EP Lost to Apathy was released in 2004. In addition to the title track, the EP contains three other tracks that are not featured on the Character album. Derivation TNB is a song that was compiled from various tracks on the character album. UnDo control comes from the Live Damage - DVD . There is also a video clip for the theme song and a screensaver . The cover artwork was also designed by Niklas Sundin.
