action

The restorer Adrienne met Jack Saunders, the director of a museum for ancient art. They later get married and have a daughter named Mary.

A museum employee who recognizes an Egyptian necklace as a fake is murdered. Adrienne finds his body. The act is disguised as suicide. The jewelry is checked again and it is found that it has been exchanged for a copy. The damage incurred amounts to 4.5 million US dollars. The matter is extremely uncomfortable for the reputation of Jack Saunders. His wife noticed various inconsistencies in her husband's behavior. She suspects her husband is having an affair. After a marriage argument, Jack moves out. He dies as a result of a car accident.

Adrienne learns from the insurance company that the person named Jack Saunders had died sixteen years earlier. She then does her own research into her husband's past. She learns that years ago he assumed the identity of his late best friend. She also learns that it was not he who died in a car accident, but a hitchhiker. Jack lives on under a different name and has remarried. He tries to take the valuable original piece of jewelery from Adrienne that he had hidden in the apartment. He threatens her and pursues her. Adrienne describes him as sick because he murdered several people. He fell to his death in an elevator shaft through a deception.

Adrienne and her daughter are moving and starting a new life.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on September 27, 1991 that the beginning of the film followed the traditional formula of thriller. The film then develops " real tension " and ends so absurdly that it takes a great effort of memory to remember those parts of the film that are really good. You have to laugh when you see the end. The general direction of the action is predictable.

The magazine TV Spielfilm wrote that Goldie Hawn's " skillful game " made " overlook some of the inconsistencies of the thriller ".

background

The film was shot in New York City and Toronto . It grossed approximately $ 28.7 million in US cinemas .
