Jan Rubeš
Jan Ladislav Rubeš (born June 6, 1920 in Volyně , Czechoslovakia ; † June 29, 2009 in Toronto , Canada ) was a Czechoslovak-Canadian opera singer ( bass ) and actor .
Life
Rubeš made his stage debut in Prague in 1940 as Basilio in The Barber of Seville and remained the leading bass singer at the Prague Opera until he emigrated in 1948. In the same year he had successfully represented his home country as a prizewinner at the Geneva International Music Festival .
In 1949 he was - at that time a member of the Royal Conservatory Opera - co-founder of the Canadian Opera Company and was a member of it until 1989 in over 1000 appearances. From 1974 to 1976 he was the tour director of the COC. Rubeš sang roles in six languages and was a permanent member of the Opera Festival Company ensemble , from which the COC emerged. As a solo singer he gave concerts in Canada and New York, in Frankfurt and in Central America.
In 1953 he was part of the first ever CBC television show alongside Glenn Gould . He became known nationwide as the presenter of the weekly radio show The Songs of my People , which was first broadcast in the same year and aired for ten years. From 1975 to 1983 he presented the television show Guess What .
In the 1960s Rubeš began appearing as an actor in television series , which he placed more and more at the center of his work in the following decades. In total, he worked in more than 40 productions, including feature films . In 1995 he first appeared on Broadway .
Rubeš also taught at universities. He was married to Susan Douglas , with whom he had three sons.
