List of name variants of jazz musicians
These lists are sortable. The default setting is based on the musician's surname (Lemma). In addition, it can be sorted by the nickname or the Islamic, Indian or African name of the artist, the real first name, nationality, style, category, reference and comments. |
List of name variants of jazz musicians
This list initially contains the nicknames of well-known jazz musicians and is intended to be exemplary. Many well-known jazz musicians are often only named by their nicknames (such as "Satchmo" for Louis Armstrong or "Bird" for Charlie Parker ). The diminutive forms of first names commonly used in English (such as Arthur = Art, William = Bill, James = Jim, Jimmy, Robert = Bobby etc.) are not taken into account. Honorary titles such as “First Lady of Jazz” ( Ella Fitzgerald ) or “The King of Jazz” ( Benny Goodman ) are left out. Stage name i. e. S. are the subject of another list; this is followed by the African , Islamic and Indian names of some jazz musicians.
Nicknames
Based on the categories, it can be seen that the largest group is made up of those musicians who have made their nickname their stage name, such as Pepper Adams . Nicknames were also used in addition to real or stage names, such as "Lady Day" for Billie Holiday , "Bean" for Coleman Hawkins or "Brownie" for Clifford Brown . Name additions form a further category; some were also used, such as "Cleanhead" by Eddie Vinson , others became part of the stage name, such as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis or Harry "Sweets" Edison . Another smaller category are the nicknames, which were formed from the initials; the most famous example is probably Jay Jay Johnson .

More artist names
This list contains other artist names. In some cases, artist names are already listed in the previous list if they originated from a nickname, but the surname was not changed. Last names adapted to English have a large share in the list. Accepted married names are excluded from this list, including those that were continued as artist names after a separation (examples: Carla Bley / Carla Borg or Mary Lou Williams / Mary Alfrieda Scruggs). Another unrecorded group is that of the pseudonyms that were accepted for certain recording sessions due to conflicting record contract agreements (best known example: Charlie Parker alias Charlie Chan in Jazz at Massey Hall 1953).

Islamic names
Against the backdrop of racial discrimination in the United States, a number of musicians found Islam to be a non-racial religion. This turn took place at the time of the decolonization of many African and Asian states. Some musicians then adopted Islamic names; some musicians like Art Blakey or Kenny Clarke later gave them up, others stuck to them, like Abdullah Ibrahim , Ahmad Jamal , Yusef Lateef or Idrees Sulieman .

African names and additions to names
Analogous to the turn to Islam since the 1950s, there was also a turn to African (musical) traditions in the next decade under the influence of the civil rights movement among Afro-American musicians; this also led to the adoption of African names and additions to names. The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in Chicago played a major role in this movement .

Indian names and suffixes
Similar to the previous two decades, there was a turn in the 1970s from jazz musicians to gurus with an Indian background, from whom the musicians were given new names that had a spiritual meaning. Some of the musicians carried these names until around 1975.
