Wyatt Ruther

Wyatt "Bull" Ruther (born February 5, 1923 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † October 31, 1999 in San Francisco ) was an American modern jazz bassist .

At the beginning of his career, Wyatt Ruther worked in 1951/52 with Dave Brubeck and from 1952 to 1955 with interruptions with Erroll Garner and briefly with Woody Herman . In between he was the accompanist for the singer Lena Horne . In 1955 he founded the Canadian Jazz Quartet in Ottawa , worked for the first time as a music teacher in Canada in 1956/57 and played with Peter Appleyard in Toronto in 1958 . In 1958/59 he played with Chico Hamilton , in 1959 with George Shearing . In the 1960s he worked with Buddy Rich , in the band of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims , with Gerry Mulligan , Ahmad Jamal , Mary Lou Williams and in 1964/65 with the Count Basie Orchestra. Between 1972 and 1984 he was part of the Vancouver jazz scene and played a. a. in the trio of Fraser MacPherson , but also with Mike Taylor and Renée Doruyter; then he moved to San Francisco, where he u. a. Benny Carter accompanied.

In addition to his recordings as an accompanist, he recorded four tracks with his own septet in 1955 for the album Basses Loaded .
